How to Wash Squishmallows
Learn how to wash Squishmallows correctly! Get tips for spot cleaning, machine washing (with caveats), and drying so that your soft friends stay clean and in great shape.

Squishmallows, the super popular plush toys, are known for their incredible softness and squishy texture. But like all plushies, they need a bit of care to stay clean and inviting. Although the official recommendation is to only spot clean Squishmallows, we know that many owners prefer a more thorough wash every now and then.
This guide covers the best methods for cleaning Squishmallows – from gentle spot cleaning to tips for machine washing (with a little disclaimer!), as well as how to dry and reshape them without ruining their signature texture.
Step 1: Assess the Need – Spot Cleaning or a Full Wash?
Before you toss your Squishmallow into the washing machine, evaluate how much cleaning it needs. Is it just a small stain? Then spot cleaning is your best bet!
Spot Cleaning (Recommended Method):
- Use a small amount of mild dish soap or laundry detergent on a clean, soft cloth (preferably a microfiber cloth).
- Gently rub the stained area. Don’t scrub too hard!
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Make sure all the soap is gone.
- Gently squeeze out the excess water (don’t twist it!).
- Let the Squishmallow air dry.
Machine Washing (At Your Own Risk!):
The manufacturer does not recommend machine washing, but many Squishmallow owners have had success with this method – when done carefully. Here are a few tips:
- Protection: Place the Squishmallow in a laundry bag or a pillowcase that’s securely tied. This protects it from abrasion in the machine.
- Cold Water: Always use cold water. Warm water can damage the fabric and filling.
- Gentle Cycle: Choose the gentlest cycle available (delicate, wool, or similar).
- Mild Detergent: Use a mild detergent free of bleach or fabric softener.
- No Spin or Lowest Spin: A heavy spin cycle can deform the Squishmallow.
- Consider washing the Squishmallow with other soft items, like towels, to help cushion it during the wash.
Step 2: Drying – Air Drying is Best!
Air Drying (Recommended Method):
- Gently squeeze out the excess water (don’t twist it!).
- Lay the Squishmallow flat on a clean, dry towel.
- Allow it to air dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight (since sunlight can fade the colors).
- Turn the Squishmallow regularly to ensure even drying.
Tumble Dryer (At Your Own Risk!):
Some owners use a tumble dryer on the lowest heat setting or with an air-only cycle (no heat). Place the Squishmallow in a pillowcase for extra protection. Keep in mind that this method can damage the fabric and filling, and is not recommended by the manufacturer. Check on it frequently to make sure it doesn’t overheat.
Step 3: Fluffing and Reshaping – Restore the Squishmallow’s Charm!
Once the Squishmallow is completely dry, it’s time to bring back its original shape and softness:
- Shake Well: Give the Squishmallow a vigorous shake.
- Knead and Massage: Gently knead and massage it to redistribute the filling and restore its shape.
- Fluff It Up: Use your fingers to fluff up the filling and revive that soft texture.
Extra Tips for Stubborn Stains and Maintenance:
- Stain Removal Pen: For tough stains, try a stain removal pen or remover. Always test it on a small, inconspicuous area first!
- Washing Frequency: Wash Squishmallows that are used regularly every 1-3 months. Wash more frequently if they’re used as sleep companions, but otherwise only when they appear dirty or stained.
- Avoid: Bleach, fabric softener, and warm water.
- The Balancing Act: Find a balance between cleanliness and preserving the toy’s integrity. Spot cleaning is preferable for routine maintenance.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Squishmallows remain soft, clean, and huggable for a long time!
